Anoxia
Anoxia is a condition in which an organ’s tissues suffer oxygen deprivation despite adequate blood flow to the tissue. In the context of birth injuries, as a result of a severe case of anoxia a baby will often appear comatose (in a state of unconsciousness) for periods ranging from hours to days, weeks, or months. This may be followed by symptoms, seizures or myoclonic jerks (muscle spasms or twitches).
There are a number of circumstances which could cause anoxia during birth. For example, common situations are: (1) where the infant becomes tangled in the umbilical cord, (2) where the infant is too large to fit through the birth canal, or, (3) where the infant is in breach position.
Anoxia can lead to very serious injuries including cerebral palsy, brain damage, or death. If you or someone you know has been injured due to anoxia, you may be entitled to monetary compensation.
