Misdiagnosis
Misdiagnosis is one of the most common types of medical mistakes made today. Almost everyone is familiar with the idea of a total misdiagnosis, where the wrong disease is identified, but there are also several other types of partial misdiagnosis. A partial misdiagnosis can easily have an adverse effect on treatment and prognosis. Other misdiagnoses include being diagnosed with the wrong disease, or being diagnosed as having a disease when a person is in fact healthy.
Additionally, one may be misdiagnosed as healthy even though one is sick, one may be diagnosed as having a general disease with a misdiagnosis as to the subtype of the disease, and a doctor may fail to diagnose complications that may stem from an already diagnosed illness. A misdiagnosis may be malpractice if the doctor fails to get a medical history, order the appropriate test for the illness, or recognize the symptoms of the illness. The doctor is under duty to perform to a certain standard of care when treating a patient in any way.
